The Bay Weekender

San Francisco & the Bay Area

Edition of September 28, 2026Covering Monday, September 28 to Sunday, November 1, 2026

Catch-up edition, published October 26, 2026.

At a Glance

Five weeks of the real San Francisco summer, ending on a Saturday Halloween

This edition covers five weeks, from the last days of September to the first of November, and it is the most crowded stretch of the Bay Area year. October in San Francisco is the real summer: the fog backs off, the evenings stay warm and the city spends every weekend outdoors.

The first weekend sets the tone. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass fills Golden Gate Park from Friday October 2 to Sunday October 4, the Castro Street Fair closes four streets on the Sunday, and Fleet Week starts the same day and runs to October 12, with the Blue Angels overhead from October 9 to 11. Jack Johnson and Jon Batiste are at the Greek in Berkeley the same week.

The sport has a genuine storyline for once. The Valkyries are in the playoffs as the second seed and, if they keep winning, Chase Center hosts semifinal games on October 4 and 7 and the opening games of the Finals on October 17 and 19. The Warriors are back for preseason on October 6 and open their home season on October 23. The Oakland Roots say goodbye to the Coliseum on October 10.

Mid-month is festival weekend in every direction: the Autumn Lights in Oakland, the Art and Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay, the 626 Night Market in Pleasanton, Open Studios at the Shipyard and two street fairs in SF on October 17 alone. Then the window closes on Halloween, which falls on a Saturday this year, with the Castro block party, Nightmare on Front Street the night before, and the Quakes, Dons and Valkyries all potentially at home that day.

Pick of the Month

San Francisco Fleet Week

Sunday October 4 to Monday October 12, 2026Northern Waterfront and Marina Green, San FranciscoFree. Air show October 9 to 11.

Fleet Week is the rare San Francisco tradition that is free, enormous and genuinely for everyone. For nine days the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard are in town, and the waterfront between Fort Mason and Pier 39 becomes the best seat in the house for something you cannot see anywhere else in the country.

The centrepiece is the air show from noon to 4pm on Friday October 9, Saturday October 10 and Sunday October 11, headlined by the Blue Angels flying between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. On the Friday morning the Parade of Ships comes in under the bridge from 11am, with the reviewing stand at Marina Green. From October 7 to 12 the ships themselves open for free tours at Piers 27 and 35, first come, first served.

Practical advice: pick your viewing spot by noon, because the Marina Green, Crissy Field and the Aquatic Park bleachers fill early. Do not drive to the waterfront; Muni and a long walk will beat any parking search. Bring a layer even in a warm October, because the wind off the bay picks up just as the jets arrive.

The story of the window. The second-seeded Valkyries won Game 1 of their first-round series against Dallas at Chase Center on September 27. A Game 3 would be at home on October 2, and the league bracket gives them home court in the semifinals and, if they get there, the Finals.
